Facts about Etobicoke

• Etobicoke is located in the western edge of the City of Toronto and has a population of 334,491 (2006 census)
• Etobicoke was established as a townshup in 1850, as a borough in 1967 (when merged with Long Branch, New Toronto and Mimico, and as a city in 1984. It was amalgamated into the City of Toronto in 1998.
• Its land area covers 124 square kilometres
• The name "Etobicoke" is believed to mean "place where the black/wild alders grow," derived from the Mississauga word wadoopikaang (pronounced "wah-do-be-kang"), which described the area between the Etobicoke Creek and the Humber River, which was the original boundary of Toronto when the land was purchased from the Native Americans. The first provinical land surveyor called the area "ato-be-coake".
